Yesterday Mountain Lodge Telluride was host to a photoshoot of the 2006 & 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist, snowboarder Seth Wescott, for Bollé Performance Eyewear. What a great subject and a super nice guy!

We decided his shoot was reminiscent of Dos Equis' frontman, The Most Interesting Man in the World, so we at Mountain Lodge are dubbing Seth 'The Most Interesting Man in Telluride'!

Anyway, be your own judge. And in-keeping with the competitive nature of this week's LG FIS Snowboardcross (SBX) in Telluride, we at the Mountain Lodge encourage anyone to submit your opinions!

Powder Magazine features Telluride

It doesn't get much better than a gorgeous 10-page spread in Powder Magazine. Read the pre-powder buzz about this season's place to be.

RESORT OVERVIEW

Nestled among the highest concentration of 14,000 foot peaks in North America, Telluride blends historic buildings and local watering holes with new world-class hotels and restaurants. After opening Revelation Bowl last winter, Telluride is thrilled to announce the opening of Gold Hill Chutes 2-5. Telluride’s incredible expansion in the past 2 years includes public hike-to access to Black Iron Bowl, Palmyra Peak and Gold Hill Chutes 6-10. Touting the combination of awe-inspiring views, unrivaled terrain, and the ease of direct flights from 9 major hubs, Telluride is truly unmatched in North America.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

• 12/17-20: Visa U.S. Snowboardcross Cup
• February: Subaru Freeskiing Open

TERRAIN BREAKDOWN

Traversing from north to south, Telluride’s terrain naturally shifts from expert to beginner, keeping skiers and boarders in areas suitable to their skills. 23% beginner, 36% intermediate and 41% advanced/expert. There are multiple backcountry access points along Gold Hill ridge and the Palmyra ridge. Backcountry is not patrolled or maintained by Telluride Ski Resort.
POWDER MAGAZINE Perspective
T-Ride has certainly become even more powder-friendly the last couple year with the openings of Palmyra Peak, Gold Hill Chutes, Black Iron Bowl and Revelation Bowl. The plethora of terrain will keep you busy for days and have you wondering if you’re in the San Juans or Alps.

T-ride #8 in Freeskier Magazine "Resort Guide 2010"

Telluride captures the number eight spot in the top 12 recommended ski resorts in North America. Thanks Freeskier magazine, we agree that our 4,425 ft vertical drop is pretty darn awesome.

Snugged high up at the head of a box canyon, Telluride offers up the big-mountain goods for anyone willing to make the trek. To get the most bang for its buck, Telluride doesn’t waste too many acres with “groomers” and “beginner” runs. Instead, Telluride is loaded with chutes, bowls and seriously steep terrain, covered in over 300 inches of San Juan’s finest. Looking for above treeline action? Head over to he recently opened Revelation Bowl. Want to scare yourself? Get your tail to the Bear Creek area. No matter where you go, Telluride doesn’t disappoint.

The town of Telluride is split into two separate areas, The Mountain Village and the Old Town. The Mountain Village is a newer development that’s aimed at tourists. Newer restaurants, condos and hotels all circle around main walkways and fire pits; good for wholesome family fun. The Old Town — originally settled for silver mining in the mid-1800s — is an authentic mountain village, with local bars, cheaper lodging and authentic shops. We suggest sending it at the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon and the Last Dollar Saloon, but don’t drink too much: you don’t want to miss a full day shredding all that Telluride has to offer.

Western US Travel Profiles: Mountain Lodge at Telluride

Mountain Lodge at Telluride in Colorado
by Angele Sionna, Phoenix Western US Travel Examiner
August 6th, 2010 9:59 am MT

Phoenix Examiner INTERVIEW with Neil Hastings, Director of Sales and Marketing
Open 10 years, 457 Mountain Village Boulevard, Telluride, CO, 81435

Mountain Lodge at Telluride is an exclusive, slopeside, upscale resort featuring an eclectic blend of rustic elegance and western charm. At 9,500 feet in the San Juan Mountains, the resort offers private luxury cabins, condominiums, and lodge rooms as well as executive conference rooms offer space for small meetings and retreats, reception space and full catering service.

Examiner: What makes your establishment unique?
Neil: Many things!  To start with, the setting: Mountain Lodge at Telluride is set apart from the main core of Mountain Village, yet is a few minutes’ walk to everything, and in winter, is ski-in/ski-out. Nowhere else in the area is there a property that is at once in the heart of all things Telluride, yet private and secluded.
Our architecture also is unique. With rustic, but elegant, interiors and exteriors, the log cabin style of architecture is western, mountain and very much Telluride. Inside, the Tavern – our bar and lounge area – is the most spectacular room in the Telluride area. A huge fireplace, high ceilings and tall windows frame views of the San Sophia Mountains.

What’s also unique about Mountain Lodge is the variety of accommodations. With lodge rooms, small and large condo units, and cabins with up to six bedrooms, there’s more variety and flexibility here than anywhere in Telluride.

Examiner:  What is a little known factoid about your place?
Neil: I can think of two. First, most people (even local residents) don’t know that Mountain Lodge at Telluride is one of only a couple lodging properties in the area with an outdoor heated pool and hot tub. In the summer, it’s a hub of activity for guests. In the winter, it’s a wonderful experience to sit out in the hot tub when it’s snowing.

Second, Mountain Lodge has quietly become the number-one lodging site for wedding parties in and around Telluride. I believe it’s because of the value, and the variety of accommodations; we can take care of all types of needs, whether it’s a single person in a lodge room or cabin. The pool’s a popular gathering spot, and we have more and more catered rehearsal dinners, brunches and receptions.

Examiner: What is your patrons' favorite thing about your establishment?
Neil: Guests come here, and keep coming back, for the value. It’s not the most expensive property in Telluride, and it’s not the least expensive. But it’s the best value for the dollar, with the variety of accommodations, setting, location, pool and amenities that range from gourmet kitchens to luxurious robes to free wi-fi.

Examiner: What's your favorite?
Neil: The views of the mountains that completely surround Telluride, hands down. I’ve lived in several mountain towns in the western United States, and for someone who is a passionate lover of mountains, this is the best place to live, and specifically to work. I got into resort management not because it can make me rich, but because it’s a vital, interesting career that allows me to live here. I wake up and come to work every morning looking at the most spectacular mountain backdrop in the country.

Examiner: Anything new on the horizon that people can look forward to trying?
Neil: We started partnering with an adventure trip company, Further Adventures, this summer, to offer guests guided white-water rafting, fly fishing, hiking and mountain biking adventures through the local mountains. Experienced guides leads participants on half-day, full-day and multi-day trips. And the best part is that guests doing an activity will receive substantial discounts on both the activity and lodging here at Mountain Lodge at Telluride.

Examiner: What is the top thing you recommend visitors to your city do/see - besides your business, of course?
Neil: For those visiting in the spring, summer or fall, my number-one suggestion is to take a four-wheel-drive tour of the backcountry. Guides will take you to elevations of 12,000 feet and higher on trails in the national forests around Telluride. Some trips go over our beautiful high mountain passes (Imogene, Ophir, Black Bear); others visit mining ghost towns; and some skirt back roads for extraordinary views of the Wilson mountain range, Lizard Head and Sneffels Wilderness Area. You’ll travel through open meadows filled with wildflowers, cross clear mountain streams, see waterfalls and probably spot some wildlife.

Packing for a Ski Vacation: What to Take -- Mountain Lodge at Telluride offers ‘top 10’ list --

Packing for a Ski Vacation: What to Take

-- Mountain Lodge at Telluride offers ‘top 10’ list --

Telluride, Colo. – Time to head to the slopes?   No matter where you go, when, or for how long, the details can make the difference between a fun-filled, relaxing trip and misery.  Mountain Lodge at Telluride, deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, offers these tips on what to bring – and what not to bring – to make your ski trip memorable and fun.

Don’t Forget to Pack:

1.       Sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses: Higher altitudes, sunny days, and reflection from the snow can produce severe sunburns, even with temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

2.       Moisturizer: Higher altitudes, especially in the western United States, bring very dry air. Bring along a favorite moisturizer and use it liberally.

3.       Layers: Weather can change in minutes, literally. When you’re out in it all day, be prepared to take layers on and off to stay comfortable and dry. Focus on wicking fabrics and avoid cotton to stay warm.

4.       Water bottle: When you’re active and at altitude, it’s easy to become dehydrated and not realize it. Fill your bottle with water on your way to the slopes – in the car, train, bus or plane – and keep drinking throughout your trip. Plenty of water also helps to prevent headaches often associated with visits to high altitude.

5.       Toys, books, and games: If you’re traveling with the family, be sure to bring something to entertain the kids. Even the most energetic may have some “quiet” time.

6.       Swimsuits: For you and the kids. Most hotels have hot tubs and indoor pools.

7.       A good book: Skiers of all ages like to take some time off from skiing and just rest.

8.       Good walking shoes: You won’t be in ski boots all the time, and you’ll want to be comfortable walking around town, the hotel, and to restaurants. Ladies, no high heels – they don’t work on snow and ice.

9.       Thin socks: Skiers often make the mistake of bringing thick socks in the hope of keeping warm feet in those ski boots. Thinner socks made of a wicking material will keep your toes and feet much warmer.

10.   Groceries: Whether you’re driving or flying, try to keep some healthy snacks on hand. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day can put extra energy into active days, particularly at altitude.

“Preparation can make a good vacation great, or turn disappointment into fun,” says Neil Hastings, director of sales and marketing for Mountain Lodge. The resort, with slopeside access, welcomes guests from throughout the United States and many foreign countries each year.  “It’s difficult to know what to expect from altitude, drier air and the climate if you don’t live here year-round,” he says, “so we encourage visitors to prepare in order to get the most out of their vacations.”
